Buying gold in Thrissur

Thrissur is called the gold capital of India and the claim survives scrutiny. Roughly 30% of all the gold jewellery sold in the country is made here, in around 3,000 small manufacturing units employing something in the region of 40,000 artisans. Several of India's largest jewellery chains are headquartered in the district.

The trade did not appear by accident. Roman and Arab merchants put in at the port of Kodungallur, near Thrissur, on their voyages, and in the 18th century King Sakthan Thampuran invited Syrian Christian traders to settle in the town, which established the merchant base the industry still rests on. Kodungallur today has more than a hundred jewellery shops inside a single kilometre.

For a buyer this changes the calculation. In most Indian cities you are buying from a retailer who bought from a manufacturer somewhere else. In Thrissur you are often much closer to the workshop, which can show up in making charges and in the range of designs available, particularly for traditional Kerala pieces.

The buying year runs on the Malayalam calendar. Vishu is the peak, with Thrissur Pooram and Onam behind it, and the wedding season layered across them. Akshaya Tritiya matters here as it does everywhere, but it is not the fulcrum it is in Tamil Nadu.

Kerala's trade quotes 916 by convention, so the 22K figure on this page is the one that will be discussed. Ask whether the making charge is a percentage or a flat rate per gram before comparing shops, because with this much manufacturing capacity nearby the spread between quotations can be wide.
