Why India uses so many units
Gold in India is bought in grams, quoted in tola by bullion traders, sold by the pavan across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and priced internationally in troy ounces. None of these has displaced the others, so a family record listing a necklace in tola and a shop quoting the same piece in grams are both perfectly current.
The two that catch people out are the sovereign and the troy ounce. A sovereign is exactly 8 grams, which makes mental arithmetic easy but means a “two pavan chain” is 16 grams, not 16.something. And the troy ounce used for bullion is heavier than the ordinary ounce, 31.1035 grams against 28.3495, which is why converting an international spot price with the wrong ounce puts you out by roughly 10%.

- How many grams in a tola?
- One tola is 11.6638 grams. It survives from the pre-decimal system and is still used in wholesale bullion and in older family records.
- What is a sovereign or pavan?
- Eight grams. Called a sovereign in English and a pavan in Tamil and Malayalam, it is the common unit for jewellery in south India, so a chain might be quoted as two pavan rather than sixteen grams.
- Why is a troy ounce different from an ounce?
- A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams and is the unit international bullion markets price in. The ordinary avoirdupois ounce is 28.3495 grams and is not used for precious metals.
