An estimate. Wastage, stone charges and shop-specific rates vary. Treat this as the figure to check a quotation against, not a quotation.

How the bill is built up

Every gold jewellery invoice in India is the same four lines, in the same order. Knowing them is the difference between comparing two quotations properly and comparing two headline numbers.

  1. Metal value. Weight multiplied by the rate for that purity. The only line the daily rate affects.
  2. Making charges. The labour. Quoted either as a percentage of the metal value or as a flat amount per gram. This is where two shops selling identical pieces differ most, and it is the line worth negotiating.
  3. Hallmarking. A fixed BIS fee per article, not per gram.
  4. GST. 3% on the total, in the ordinary composite-supply case.

One thing the calculator cannot know: wastage. Some jewellers add a wastage percentage on top of making charges, expressed as extra grams rather than extra rupees. If a quotation mentions wastage, ask for the final billed weight in writing, otherwise you are comparing two numbers that mean different things.

Common questions

How are making charges calculated on gold jewellery?
Two ways, and jewellers use both. Either a percentage of the metal value, commonly 8% to 20% and higher for intricate work, or a flat rupee amount per gram. Always ask which basis a quotation uses, because the same piece can look cheaper on one basis and dearer on the other.
How much GST is charged on gold jewellery?
Finished jewellery is a composite supply with gold as the principal supply, so a retail invoice normally charges 3% on the whole value including making charges. Where making charges are billed separately as a job-work service they attract 5% instead. This calculator offers both.
Are making charges negotiable?
Usually yes, more so on plain gold than on stone-set or handcrafted pieces, and more so on larger purchases. Wastage, where quoted separately, is also worth questioning. Ask for it in writing before you agree.
What is the hallmarking charge?
A per-article BIS fee, currently ₹45 plus GST, charged per piece rather than per gram. On a small item it is negligible; on a set of several pieces it is charged for each one.
