Delhi buys its gold in two quite different places. Dariba Kalan, the older of them, runs off Chandni Chowk towards the Jama Masjid and has been a jewellers' street since the 17th century, laid out in Shah Jahan's time. The name comes from the Persian phrase dur-e be-baha, meaning unparalleled pearl, which tells you what the street was originally known for.

Around fifty shops sell ornaments along it, and the character is bridal: heavy sets, older design vocabularies, and workshops behind the shopfronts rather than glass counters and display lighting. The same lane is also Delhi's traditional home of ittar, natural perfume oils, which is a reliable way to know you are in the right place.

Karol Bagh is the modern counterweight. Larger showrooms, chain brands, more standardised pricing and easier parking, at the cost of the workshop-level bargaining that Dariba still allows.

The buying calendar in Delhi is its own thing. Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya matter as they do everywhere, but Karva Chauth adds a demand spike that most of the country does not share, and the north Indian wedding season concentrates purchases into a narrower window than in the south.

If you are buying in the old city, take the weight and the making charge basis in writing before you discuss discounts. Dariba's strength is that you can often talk to someone who understands how the piece was made. Its weakness, for an unprepared buyer, is that quotations are verbal, fast and difficult to compare afterwards.
